Nekomans Viper Pit Presents Joecon in Retrospect

Nekoman, curator of Nekoman’s Viper Pit, sat down with various members of the G.I.Joe Community to put together a retrospective of JoeCon and what it means, or has meant to those whom were invited to sit in on the panel. From Nekoman –

The GI Joe collecting community is approaching a special occasion with the upcoming Joecon. That is, this Joecon will be the last Joecon convention and mark the end of the GI Joe Collector’s Club, who’s been operating for over fifteen years now. It’s uncertain what we’ll be left with and what the future holds for GI Joe collectors, so I’ve decided to discuss the topic in the form of seven questions with five of the best GI Joe writers on the internet.

The Panel members included:

  • RTG: A GI Joe photographer who specializes in 1982 through 1984 figures. He also has recently started his blog Attica Gazzette, which has snappy profiles and top-tier photographs. Also check him out on Instagram.
  • CIAD: Owner of Cobra Island, an all things GI Joe news site and message board. He was also the long-time administrator of HISS Tank, and covered news there for about a decade. He also posts to Instagram.
  • Mike T: GI Joe blogger who has run Forgotten Figures since 1999. His long time dedication to the brand is clear in his knowledge of some of the most obscure GI Joe facts from his time collecting. He’s also on Instagram.
  • Dragon Fortress: Another blogger who’s site is The Dragon Fortress, a blog dedicated to the often underrated toys from the 90‘s, with a frequent focus on GI Joe. Here he is on Instagram.
  • Justin Bell: Owner of Generals Joes, another prolific Joe Blog that’s run since 2002, featuring reviews of current figures, his diorama comic, and GI Joe news. Here is the Instagram for his site.

We here at Cobra Island were honored to be considered to share our thoughts alongside these fine gentlemen and cannot thank Nekoman enough for allowing us the opportunity to contribute.

You can read the Retrospective in its entirety here – Joecon in Retrospect: A Discussion with the Best Joe Writers from Around the Web

Save Toys R Us Go Fund Me Campaign Has Been Launched

With all the sad news of Toys ‘R’ Us closing its doors, this bit of news should hopefully lift your spirits. Isaac Larian, a toy manufacturer who gave the world Bratz dolls and the current hit toy LOL Surprise, has launched a crowd-funding campaign to save Geoffrey! Larian, chief executive of California-based MGA Entertainment Inc., a privately held toy and entertainment company, and other investors have pledged over $200 million. They want to raise another $800 million in order to make a $1 billion bid to acquire “all or some Toys R Us assets through the bankruptcy process.”

Help Save Toys’R’Us – GoFundMe

You can be a part of this historic movement to #SaveToysRUs by donating today!  Your donation will help to ensure that generations to come can “always be a Toys“R”Us kid” and save employee jobs that are at stake should the company cease operation. The deadline for reaching the $1 billion goal is Memorial Day, May 28, 2018. The funds collected through this campaign would be used in the formulation of a bid to acquire some Toys“R”Us assets through the bankruptcy process. This is not a charitable donation, and certain donor disclosures apply.

You can get the full details by visiting the campaign page listed above. Will you be joining in to help save Toys’R’Us? Sound off after the break on the Cobra Island Forums!

Goodbye Toys R Us – Hello K B Toys?

With word that Toys R Us Is Prepping to Liquidate Its U.S. Operations, the following intel couldn’t come at a better time for the Toy Industry. In a LinkedIn article published this past Friday, Mr. Ellia Kassoff, founder of Strategic Marks, LLC shared the following exciting news –

WE’RE GOING TO SAVE THE TOY INDUSTRY!

As some of you know, our company Strategic Marks, LLC has acquired KB-Toys about a year ago. During that period, we had been working on several models to resurrect the “Great American Toy Store” and to make sure the stores can compete with Toys R Us, other brick and mortar stores as well as on-line retail. Well, with the demise of Toys R Us, this week, we have now accelerated our business plan and hope to have our stores up and running before Christmas. We’re in discussions with many of the toy manufactures, as we try to find out the best way to support them and the 20% loss of the US toy market due to the Toys R Us liquidation. We believe we will have the infrastructure in-place and [hopefully] save the toy industry. If you are a toy manufacturer or distributor, or ex KB Toys associate, please feel free to call us at: 949-424-1664 or email us at: info@kbtoysstore.com. We hope to help the industry and at the same time resurrect the amazing KB Toys name!

There was once a time where KB Toys was everywhere. Will we soon return to those days? What are your thoughts on KB re-entering the market space? Sound off after the break on the Cobra Island Forums!

Toys R Us – The End Of An Era

The end of an era. We grew up with Toys”R”Us, so the news of it closing its doors for good feels like saying goodbye to an old friend.

Just a week ago, we brought you word that Toys ‘R’ Us Is Prepping to Liquidate Its U.S. Operations. Now, the news that many of us have been dreading to hear…Toys ‘R’ Us is prepping to shut down operations. So many fond memories will be left behind – Finding new joes in the aisle, Geoffrey’ big book at Christmas, the excitement of after school trips…just the joy of being a Toys’R’Us kid.

Although online shopping played its part in bringing down TRU, the company’s biggest problem was this: TRU was saddled with billions of dollars in debt; So much, in fact, that their debt stopped it from making the necessary investment in stores. That translated to an unpleasant shopping experience that doomed the chain. The company told employees Wednesday that it would close or sell its US stores after 70 years in business.

From all of us here at Cobra Island, thanks for everything, TRU. Hopefully there’s a Hail Mary that can save you so future generations can have the same experiences we did. Share your thoughts with us after the break on the Cobra Island Forums.

Toys R Us Is Prepping to Liquidate Its U.S. Operations

In news that shouldn’t be all that surprising, word spread across the internet yesterday that Toys ‘R’ Us is prepping to liquidate its U.S. Operations. Bloomberg shared the following:

Toys “R” Us Inc. is making preparations for a liquidation of its bankrupt U.S. operations after so far failing to find a buyer or reach a debt restructuring deal with lenders, according to people familiar with the matter.

While the situation is still fluid, a shutdown of the U.S. division has become increasingly likely in recent days, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Hopes are fading that a buyer will emerge to keep some of the business operating, or that lenders will agree on terms of a debt restructuring, the people said.

TRU has been one of the few go-to locations to find G.I.Joe product in recent years, so this is a big blow to those individuals that still enjoy the thrill of the hunt. For those of us that grew us as “Toys ‘R’ Us Kids”, this news is definitely heartbreaking. Let’s hope that TRU is able to fix its woes. What’s your take on this latest bit of disheartening news to hit Toys ‘R’ Us? Will you be happy to see them go, or do you hope they’ll dig out of the hole? Share your thoughts with us after the break on the Cobra Island Forums.
