Collecting the art of G.I. Joe: Volumes 5, 6 and Slipcase are a GO

It’s done! We did it! With your help 3D Joes will be able to complete the mission of documenting every piece of G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero painted art released from 1982-1994 in the United States!

So now that Volumes five, six and the slip cover have been funded, what’s next? The money raised above goal will go to two places:

  • Volume 6 (1993-1994) needs more great art, and it won’t be cheap! (more on that below)
  • Volume 3 (1986-1987) will be reprinted to fill all Kickstarter orders and keep these books in print for G.I.Joe fans both old and new

Carson shared a full breakdown that you can read after the break below. Included in the breakdown are details on what volume 6 will include and fans are gonna love it! There will be 20 pages of unreleased and international art in Volume 6. We realize this will only be a drop in the bucket relative to all of the art created around the world to support our favorite toy line, but it will be an interesting cross-sectional survey and hopefully it will inspire some of you to collect international Joes. To give you an idea of what we’ll see, check out this out –

Collecting the art of G.I. Joe: Volume 5 (1990-1992) now on Kickstarter

3DJoes shared word yesterday that Collecting the art of G.I.Joe Volume 5 (1990-1992) is now live on Kickstarter! It’s no surprise that volume 5 has already blown through it’s initial goal funding of $11K, so by pledging you’re already guaranteed a copy. The fun part? One of the stretch goals is for Volume 6 which will cover 1993 – 1994. To hit this goal, the campaign must reach $22K…but at $15K after just one day, things are looking very hopeful!

Thanks to Chad Hucal, 3DJoes is ready to go to press with Volume 5! Volume 1 featured 62 unique pieces of art, Volume 2 featured 95, Volume 3 featured 126, and Volume 4 featured 147. Volume 5 is bigger than ever, featuring 158 unique pieces of art and covering three years of material!

The cover will once again be card stock with an AccuFoil print, and the 80# pages will be saddle stitched, so the two page 11×16” spreads can lay flat and art will not be lost to the gutter! You’ll be glad to know the price hasn’t changed, we’re holding the line at $35 for the Accufoil Softcover. We’ve mirrored the tiers below, so make sure to read on to check them out.

Will you be getting in on Volume 5? Or will you be going in for both Volume 5 & 6 like we did? Join in on the discussion already in progress on the Cobra Island Forums

Collecting the Art of G.I.Joe: Volume 5 (1990-1992) Is Heading To Kickstarter

Word has come in from our friends from 3D Joes have shared more exciting news regarding Collecting the Art of G.I.Joe: Volume 5 (1990-1992). The next volume is almost ready for Kickstarter! From Carson –

Here’s some interesting history we’ve gleaned from the Hasbro tour, HasCon displays, and recently acquired artifacts. From 1982-1988 all explosion backgrounds were painted and horizontal lines drawn along with the figure. We even saw Tiger Force Duke on tour at Hasbro during HasCon and he’s fully repainted, including the tiger stripe background. In 1989, things changed. The Python Patrol and Slaughter’s Marauders backgrounds were added in a step separate from the painting (we saw the original Python CG painting with the 1985 CG explosion background on tour at Hasbro during HasCon).

The sub-line backgrounds (Python Patrol, Slaughter’s Marauders, Sonic Fighters, Eco Warriors, Super Sonic Fighters, DEF, Ninja Force, and Talking Battle Commanders) were all added separately in post. By now desktop publishing was readily available, so we can assume that step happened digitally, since the only painting artifacts we’ve seen are the figures themselves.

The horizontal lines for the main Joe line continued through 1992, but they were likely added in post beginning in 1990. From 1986-1989 the artist avoiding having the figures and vehicles overlap with the horizontal lines, but by 1990 that was no longer a challenge when adding them in post and thus happened much more frequently.

By 1993, all carded figures were painted without backgrounds, and those were added in post. These Kodak Ektachromes show the 1992 DEF figures and the 1990 Cobra Hurricane paintings without backgrounds.

We’ve mirrored the shared images below,  Are you as excited as we are to add Collecting the Art of G.I.Joe Volume 5 to your collection? Will you be circling back to pick up previous volumes, or do you already own them all? Get in on the discussion on the Cobra Island Forums!

Collecting the Art of G.I.Joe Volume 5 From 3DJoes.com Is Picking Up Steam

Usually vehicles and playsets received product photos to show off the play features… but not the Hammerhead! The Hammerhead received a huge inset painting with fun details such as S.A.W.-Viper, the fiercest of the Cobras, manning his underwater craft without scuba gear.

Our friends from 3DJoes.com are excited to note that volume 5 is picking up steam; Carson & Company have finished collecting, documenting, and restoring every retail figure, vehicle and playset from 1990-1992, so next up is book layout and restoration of the last several peripheral pieces and then they’re ready to Kickstart!

If you haven’t already, make sure to prep for volume 5 by picking up volumes 1 through 4:

3DJoes Auctions to benefit the family of Master Sergeant Josh Wheeler!

3DJoes announced that they’ve posted two auctions to benefit the family of Master Sergeant Josh Wheeler!

Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler was a United States Army Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (aka Delta Force) Master Sergeant. A veteran of 14 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Wheeler earned four Bronze Stars with the letter V (awarded for valor in combat) and seven Bronze Stars (awarded for heroic or meritorious service in a combat zones). He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

He served in the single most elite unit the U.S. has to offer, and he truly is one of the best of the best. His sacrifices are endless and certainly unfathomable to most. Not only was he a exemplary Soldier but also a husband, a father of four, and a local to our hometown of Southern Pines.

On Oct 22, 2015 Master Sergeant Josh Wheeler was killed in action while saving over 70 innocent captives from Islamic State militants. The New York Times reported:

“When Kurdish commandos went on a helicopter raid to rescue about 70 hostages who were about to be executed by Islamic State militants, the plan called for the Americans who accompanied them to offer support, not join in the action… But then the Kurdish attack on the prison where the hostages were held stalled, and Sergeant Wheeler responded. “He ran to the sound of the guns.” … The Kurdish fighters, known as pesh merga, tried to blast a hole in the compound’s outer wall, but could not. Sergeant Wheeler and another American, part of a team of 10 to 20 Delta Force operators who were present, ran up to the wall, breached it with explosives, and were the first ones through the hole.”
