GIJoeCon 2018 Guest Announcement – Mr. Larry Selman

The G.I.Joe Collectors Convention Website has been updated with details on a new guest appearing at GIJoeCon 2018, Mr. Larry Selman

LARRY SELMAN was born in Pennsylvania and raised in a military family. Following graduation from York Academy of Art in 1982, he built a successful career in the illustration field, by collaborating with the top art directors and major publishers in New York and around the United States. Establishing a reputation of excellence, several of his illustrations have received prestigious awards and his illustration work has also appeared on the majority of the G.I. Joe Classic Collection packaging.

Larry was involved with the building of the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. He was asked by lead sculptor Ray Kaskey to provide authentic equipment and historical expertise for the sculpting of the 28 bronze plaques that would line the entrance steps to the Memorial.

Now concentrating solely on historical fine art, his original works can be found at the US Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and on numerous other military bases and museums throughout the United States. Larry is the only artist to depict every era of American military history and every branch of service. He has worked with Medal of Honor recipients: Francis Currey and Mitchell Paige, Ranger legend Leonard Lomell, and the famed Band of Brothers, from generals, and highly decorated soldiers and new recruits.

You can see more of his illustrations and projects at: LarrySelman.com

GIJoeCon 2018 Guest Announcement – Kurt Groen

The G.I.Joe Collectors Club has announced a new guest for the G.I.Joe Collectors Convention, none other than Mr. Kurt Groen! From the Club –

KURT GROEN joined the G.I. Joe Design Team at Hasbro, Inc. in January 1989. Kurt’s first day on the job led him into designing his first 3 3/4″ G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero action figure: VAPOR, the Cobra Hurricane Pilot. Kurt joined the team just in time for the company to start producing spring-loaded launchers. This addition of “weapons that really shoot” enhanced the play value of the G.I. Joe toy line through the 1990s. His head was used as the basis to create the 1992 Oktober Guard action figure: BIG BEAR.

Kurt designed and developed all sizes of G.I. Joe, from the 3 3/4″ to the 12″ Hall of Fame and Classic Collection, including Sgt. Savage and his Screaming Eagles, along with G.I. Joe: Extreme. Kurt was lucky to work on numerous other popular Hasbro toy lines including: Jurassic Park, Starting Lineup, Winner’s Circle, WWF, Tonka, Playskool, Dinosaurs to name a few. After many years at Hasbro, Kurt moved on from toy design to Product Development in Sporting Goods where he works today.

Thanks to our friends from Just another G.I.Joe Show for the heads up! Are you excited for this latest guest announcement? Sound off on the Cobra Island Forums

Nekomans Viper Pit Presents Joecon in Retrospect

Nekoman, curator of Nekoman’s Viper Pit, sat down with various members of the G.I.Joe Community to put together a retrospective of JoeCon and what it means, or has meant to those whom were invited to sit in on the panel. From Nekoman –

The GI Joe collecting community is approaching a special occasion with the upcoming Joecon. That is, this Joecon will be the last Joecon convention and mark the end of the GI Joe Collector’s Club, who’s been operating for over fifteen years now. It’s uncertain what we’ll be left with and what the future holds for GI Joe collectors, so I’ve decided to discuss the topic in the form of seven questions with five of the best GI Joe writers on the internet.

The Panel members included:

  • RTG: A GI Joe photographer who specializes in 1982 through 1984 figures. He also has recently started his blog Attica Gazzette, which has snappy profiles and top-tier photographs. Also check him out on Instagram.
  • CIAD: Owner of Cobra Island, an all things GI Joe news site and message board. He was also the long-time administrator of HISS Tank, and covered news there for about a decade. He also posts to Instagram.
  • Mike T: GI Joe blogger who has run Forgotten Figures since 1999. His long time dedication to the brand is clear in his knowledge of some of the most obscure GI Joe facts from his time collecting. He’s also on Instagram.
  • Dragon Fortress: Another blogger who’s site is The Dragon Fortress, a blog dedicated to the often underrated toys from the 90‘s, with a frequent focus on GI Joe. Here he is on Instagram.
  • Justin Bell: Owner of Generals Joes, another prolific Joe Blog that’s run since 2002, featuring reviews of current figures, his diorama comic, and GI Joe news. Here is the Instagram for his site.

We here at Cobra Island were honored to be considered to share our thoughts alongside these fine gentlemen and cannot thank Nekoman enough for allowing us the opportunity to contribute.

You can read the Retrospective in its entirety here – Joecon in Retrospect: A Discussion with the Best Joe Writers from Around the Web

Make sure to check out Nekoman’s Viper Pit for other fantastic articles just like this! What are your thoughts on JoeCon? Share your thoughts on this Retrospective and of JoeCon with us after the break on the Cobra Island Forums!
