Forgotten Figures – 1995 Sea Wolf

The great folks over at Forgotten Figures have posted a nice article detailing one particularly forgotten vehicle from 1995.

The vehicle in question is the Sea Wolf, an arctic repaint of the original 1984 G.I. Joe Whale Hovercraft.

It’s always amazing to see these ideas from Hasbro that never came to fruition, but when it’s something like this, it’s also quite frustrating, considering the place the Whale has in the hearts of many collectors and fans.

John Royle Shares Cobra Mantis Captain Commission Art

This is awesome – John Royle has shared a commission art piece that he created for none other than Skinny! From John –

A little G.I.JOE fun for the weekend, a private commission I penciled last year of the Cobra Mantis Captain who had a small part in Ghost of a Chance, season two of the classic Sunbow animation series. Zenescope colourist Sean Ellery asked to colour it for fun and got his friend Matt James to digitally ink it. I love how Sean handled the water! Lovely!

We always love seeing obscure characters given a second lease on life. What about you? Sound off after the break on the Cobra Island Forums!

American Hero G.I.Joe Art Book Series By Dave Dorman

Dave Dorman is a name that’s synonymous with amazing artwork; Be it Star Wars, Comics or just Fantasy art, chances are there’s a piece of Mr. Dorman’s work in your collection. That said, did you know that Dave also created a ton of amazing G.I.Joe artwork? That’s where the American Hero series of art books comes in!

For those not familiar with Dave’s AMERICAN HERO books, here is a brief synopsis: Between the mid 1980’s thru the early 90’s, Dave had the great pleasure to work with Hasbro toys producing art for in-house use helping create the design of GI Joe action figures. This work was for production only and not intended for reproduction, promotion, or packaging. Dave have had many fans over the years ask about this art. Because there is continued interest to this day to see these unpublished pieces, Dave has taken your wishes and decided to publish some of these in a series of small books. While there have been a few articles in collector’s magazines and online interviews about this work, and a few scattered publication of a couple of pieces, this will be the first real collection of Dave’s Hasbro work from this period.

The art featured in the books are full color paintings produced to make the GI Joe toy figures look as if they would in real life. Dave also features some of the pencil preliminary work that went into his painting preparation. The art covers both Joe and Cobra and some variations of uniforms not produced. Dave has kept film of these works in my archives, as he does with all of his artworks, and so the reproduction of the art is the best you will find.

In September 2015, Dave published the final volume of his AMERICAN HERO series. This is a matching edition to the previous books as well in size and design. This will most likely be the last of these books as Dave has searched his archives and can not find any more examples to show. He hope you enjoy this final edition!

The books are 6″ x 9″ full color with card stock cover, 24 pages including cover. All copies are signed by the artist, Dave Dorman.

Volumes 1 & 2 are on sale for $10, whereas volume 3 will run you $20. This is one G.I.Joe art series you won’t want to miss out on, so make sure to add all 3 to your cart! Special thanks goes to the fine folks at The Fightin’ 788th for the intel. Will you be adding Mr. Dorman’s American Hero Art Book series to your collection?
