Cobra Island Flashback Friday – G.I.Joe A Real American Hero Season One Promo Poster Art by Will Meugniot

For this edition of #FlashbackFriday, we’re taking a look at the G.I.Joe a Real American Hero Season One promo poster, created by Mr. Will Meugniot. Mr.  Meugniot is an American writer, storyboard and comics artist, film producer and director, best known for his work on animated shows. He’s worked on so many favorites, from Bucky O’Hare and the Toad Wars to Exo Squad, Batman to X-Men..and of course G.I.Joe.

Yesterday, Mr. Meugniot shared this brilliant pencil comp alongside the finished G.I.Joe a Real American Hero Season one Promo poster. He notes that the finished art turned up in a lot of places, including Entertainment Weekly. He’d been asked to design the promo as a painted piece like the original Transformers poster, hence all the shading that you see. At the last minute, Sunbow decided that they’d rather do the piece as an “inked drawing” instead. Neither he nor Mr. Russ Heath had the time do complete the inking task, so the team in Ink & Paint had to sort it out – and did a remarkably good Job.

Thanks to sites like 3DJoes, pieces like this are being preserved for future generations of fans to enjoy. Many thanks to Mr. Meugniot for sharing this piece of G.I.Joe history! You can share your thoughts on this Sunbow G.I.Joe A Real American Hero Season One Promo Poster art after the break, right here on the Cobra Island Forums

G.I.JOE Season 3.1 – A Kindle Worlds Tribute to Sunbow

Mr. Gene Kendall, a blogger and contributor to comics/entertainment site CBR, stopped by to share word of his latest project currently available on Kindle Worlds

Gene has been a fan of JOE for essentially his entire life and has completed his prose tribute to the Sunbow canon a few weeks ago. It’s available here (he’d love to hear your thoughts and would appreciate any reviews): G.I. JOE: Season 3.1 (Kindle Worlds) Kindle Edition

Gene shared a synopsis on the board; Here’s a small taste –

Am I arrogant enough to believe this is what one of theanimated series’ writers would’ve done with a prose novel? Nope, but I think if this were published as a cheap paperback circa 1987, it’d be pretty entertaining. G. I. Joe works best when finding a balance between earnestness and irony, so this became as much of a guide when writing as my imposed rules. The story embraces some of the absurdity of the brand, but never dwells on it.

Head on over to Kindle Worlds and add G.I. JOE: Season 3.1 (Kindle Worlds) Kindle Edition to your reading list! Once you’re done, join us after the break on the Cobra Island Forumsto share your thoughts with Gene directly!

John Royle Shares Cobra Mantis Captain Commission Art

This is awesome – John Royle has shared a commission art piece that he created for none other than Skinny! From John –

A little G.I.JOE fun for the weekend, a private commission I penciled last year of the Cobra Mantis Captain who had a small part in Ghost of a Chance, season two of the classic Sunbow animation series. Zenescope colourist Sean Ellery asked to colour it for fun and got his friend Matt James to digitally ink it. I love how Sean handled the water! Lovely!

We always love seeing obscure characters given a second lease on life. What about you? Sound off after the break on the Cobra Island Forums!
